About Whakahoki Press

Stories of connection and kinship, of believing in what cannot yet be named — and, above all, learning to believe in yourself.

Whakahoki Press, founded by Rebecca Vardy, is an independent publishing house devoted to speculative fiction rooted in cultural wisdom, connection to land, and the enduring power of story.

Its work draws inspiration from indigenous knowledge, lived experience, and the rich relationships between people, place, memory, and imagination. Through thoughtful storytelling, Whakahoki Press seeks to foster wonder, exploration, and a deep sense of belonging in every narrative.

At its heart, Whakahoki Press exists to inspire both readers and writers, while nurturing a community that values the many strands of experience woven through every story.

Why the Pseudonyms?

The author published here writes under a pseudonym — chosen names for the work.

Sometimes that choice is practical, offering privacy and a little distance between public writing life and the rest of the world. Sometimes it creates creative clarity, allowing a body of work to speak in its own distinct voice. And sometimes a particular story simply asks for a different name.

Pseudonyms have a long history in publishing. They are both practical and personal: a way to build a clear author identity while keeping real life safely in the background.
